An alliance of beggars and criminals; Aphrem II and the Jacobite Syrian Church

   زائر كتب "

 news form India

Patriarch Mor Ignatius Aphrem II often prides on the special relationship he has with his spiritual children in Kerala, India

Sporting his signature smile, the Patriarch usually projects an aura of self contentment and self importance, but it is only when he is in India (or around Keralites from the Jacobite Syrian Church) that he really shines

Why does Patriarch Aphrem II love India so much?

I went to Kerala myself a few years ago on a 6 months trip and I think I found out the possible reasons

The Syrian Orthodox in India are split in a few factions, the two major factions are the Jacobite Syrian Christian Church (under the jurisdiction of Patriarch Aphrem II) and the Indian Orthodox Church - an independent Church that is a member of the Universal Oriental Orthodox Family of Churches.

The 'Jacobites' and the 'Orthodox' as they are usually referred to by the locals are fierce rivals.

Having to share some churches and due to the dozens of court case litigations violence flares from time to time with arrests, injuries and jail sentences.

The Catholicos of the Jacobite Church, Mor Baseoilos Thomas I is a frail old man. The Church claims he is 88 years old but he is probably in his early 90's, possibly even 95 years of age.

In any case, Mor Baselios Thomas I is physically sick and mentally senile and has been inactive for almost a decade.

He is taken out of his quarters from time to time (like a statue of the Virgin Mary is typically paraded in a Catholic Procession in Latin America) in attempt to stir the Jacobites into violent protest against the Orthodox faction.

In January 2014 the Kerala Police (that always shows much respect and caution to religious figures) had enough of the menace of violence, destruction and breaking of the law by Catholicos Baselios Thomas I and he was arrested for a few days!

The arrest was headline news in Kerala and all over India because;

1) It is very rare that a frail man in his 90's is thrown in jail

2) That this convicted criminal in his 90's happens to be the head of the Jacobite Syrian Church is truly amazing!

Mor Baselios Thomas I was ordained as Catholicos in 2002 by the late Patriarch Zaka I Iwas of Blessed Memory.

The Jacobite faction claims that it has more than 2 million members in India and another close to a million members abroad. This of course is a fabrication and a lie!

In reality, the Jacobites have 600,000 - 650,000 members in India and another 250,000 - 300,000 members abroad (mostly in UAE, Kuwait etc. but also in Europe and North America). In total less than 1 million Church members.

The Orthodox faction has 2 - 2.2 million members in India and at least 700,000 members living abroad, a total of more than 2.7 million Church members.

The Orthodox faction is 270% larger than the Jacobite faction but this was not the case 20, 15 or even 10 years ago!

In recent years (and especially since 2012) there is a steady flow of people leaving the Jacobite faction.

Around 50% of those leaving the Jacobite faction join the Orthodox faction.

Unfortunately, the other 50% ends up in other churches (mostly protestant churches) and forever loose their Orthodox Faith.

The reasons people leave the Jacobite faction at a rate of thousands of members every year;

The Jacobite faction is rigged with scandal and corruption!

From Criminal Priests officially charged with murder by the CBI, central bureau of investigation of India (the famous case of The Priest and manager of Angamaly Diocese Father Varghese Thekkekara) to Bishops who went to the press claiming they were were ordained Bishops through bribery and were threatened with violence and worst if they reveal this (such as the famous case of Bishop Kuriakose Mor Clemis, Metropolitan of Idduki who in June 2012 filed a criminal case against the Jacobite Church

Kuriakose Mor Clemis claimed members of the clergy hired people to kill him and that he underwent an attempt on his life as a result!

This small Church of less than a million members has a seemingly endless criminal history and is the subject of astonishment and mockery in Kerala and the entire india.

Is it any surprise Mor Ignatius Aphrem II is most happy when around the clergy of the Jacobite faction considering its dubious reputation?

What is the attraction and why the close knit ties between Moran Aphrem II and the Jacobite faction? Is it despite its dubious reputation the Jacobite faction has or maybe it is because of it?

This is how the system works;

The Jacobite faction has more than 50 Bishops (!)

Some Bishops have 100,000 members in their Diocese, others as little as 5,000 members (!)

The Bishops wear fancy regalia and travel to e*****enical conferences on a regular basis.

Due to the low level of theological education the majority of Jacobite Bishops receive (the seminary that ordains Priests in the Jacobite faction in Mulanthuruthy, Kerala is unfortunately run according to the curriculum of a protestant seminary in Calcutta), the majority of them have a sketchy understanding of the Orthodox faith and could not care less about the pure Orthodox dogma.

The major source of income for the Jacobite faction are donations from the 250,000 - 300,000 strong Jacobite diaspora.

The second largest source of income are donations from the e*****enical movement, catholic and protestant churches (mostly in Scandinavia, Western Europe, USA etc.)

Needless to mention that the catholic and protestant churches are duped by the false claims that the Jacobite faction is 2.8 - 3 million strong when in fact it is a dying church with less than a million members.

i ask the following questions:

--- Is the path of self destruction and enrichment of the corrupt clergy of the Jacobite faction the same path Patriarch Aphrem II has planned and is currently implementing in the Syriac Orthodox Church of Antioch?

--- Will Aphrem II ever release the tens of millions of Dollars in donations from International organizations, Government and Churches to the widows and orphans of those Martyred in Syria and Iraq?

--- Will Aphrem II continue on his present path of heresy and blatant apostasy?

--- Are the recent heresies and act of apostasy committed by Aphrem II, such as raising the Qura'n and kissing it, denying that Christ has a burial chamber on earth, hence denying the Resurrection of Christ, saying Mohammad is a Prophet of God and that Muslims worship the same God as do the Christians etc. a prelude to something more dramatic such as the formal adoption of protestant and catholic dogma or even a one world pseudo christianity that will herald the coming of a one world religion?

Most importantly I ask : When will Bishops stand up to Aphrem II and put a end to this circus of corruption, heresy and apostasy in the Syriac Orthodox Church?
